In light of one of the largest school closings in American history, closings that disproportionately affect poor children of color, Brick & Mortar: A Sci-Fi’ed Imagining of Education creates a multimedia sci-fi art exhibit imagining the future of education in Philadelphia, featuring submissions from the students themselves. Metropolarity.net offers a recap of the gallery opening.

Running a massive deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars, Philadelphia’s school system is planning to eliminate all sports, extracurricular activities, counselors and libraries—beyond which, for schools eviscerated by austerity politics, there’s not much left to lose. At noon today, May 17, thousands of students are expected to walk out of class and flood downtown. [Afrofuturist Affair: The walkout happened, and it was peaceful, well-organized, and productive].
“It’s time that the City Council and Governor Corbett started listening to students,” says Sharron Snyder, a junior at Benjamin Franklin High School and an organizer with the Philadelphia Student Union. “If they spent even one day in my school, they would know that already we don’t have the right resources to succeed.”
Walkout organizers state, “We are willing to break the stereotypes and expectations of urban youth, and are taking this opportunity to tell the world that urban school districts deserve funding, and it is your responsibility under the Commonwealth Charter to provide us with more than a ‘bare bones education.’”

In light of the Philly School District’s announcement to close 23 schools this year and chop many more into achievement networks to be managed by public and private groups, we ask:
What will our education system look like in 5 years? In 10? 15? 20+?
What will it be like to be a student in the future? A parent? An educator? What will our city be like as these changes are implemented?
Brick and Mortar Arts is calling on creative visionaries to respond to these questions for an exhibition of sci-fi themed art and performance pieces. Submit your drawings, poems, paintings, collages, skits, maps, musical pieces, sound-scapes, fabric & fiber pieces, prints, sculptures and more that imagine what a future Philly looks like. Please interpret this broadly, we are looking for the utopian, dystopian and everything in-between.
If you are interested in submitting work, please email brickandmortararts@gmail.com and tell us the medium you plan to work in. Questions are welcome too! Deadline for submissions is Saturday, May 4, 2013. Art will be hung at The Soapbox, Philadelphia’s Independent Publishing Center. Opening night of the exhibition will be Friday, May 17, 2013.
Stay tuned to hear about workshops and art-making days leading up to the deadline!

The Spring Episode of Laser Life Arrives into the Future of Next Friday, April 26, 2013 at A-Space Anarchist Community Center in West Philly
The Laser Life is a reading series dedicated to giving voice to the swirl of diversity that exists in the known and unknown universe, LASER LIFE is a queer empowered reading series that serves as a gateway to the dreaming. At its core, it’s a reading of science and speculative fiction and fantasy, with the intensity of a sweaty, West Philly poetry slam on mind-altering, homemade drugs.
Channeling Octavia Butler, Sam Delaney and the dollar bin at the comic book shop, the assembled are some of the most talented writers, both published and unpublished, in the Philadelphia area. As empires fall and our old planet crumbles, these writers are opening portals to theirs—braver, newer and out of this world.
