This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Wangechi Mutu. The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University is currently showing “Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey,” the first mid-career survey of Mutu’s work. Curated by the Nasher’s Trevor Schoonmaker, the exhibition is on view through July 21. On May 23 the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney will debut a concurrent (but obviously different) Mutu survey. It will be up through August 14.

This is Mutu’s Yo Mama (2003) from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. It’s one of the pieces Mutu and host Tyler Green discussed on this week’s show.

How to listen: Download the show to your PC/mobile device. Subscribe to The MAN Podcast via iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher or RSS. See more images of art discussed on the program.

Cosmic flashes could herald birth of black holes

The birth of a black hole may be signalled by a characteristic cosmic flash, according to researchers in the US. It was previously thought that only the most massive of black holes would produce gamma-ray bursts – narrow beams of electromagnetic radiation that shoot out of the poles of the collapsing star – when they form. But other dying stars were thought to produce a black hole without any kind of flash – seemingly disappearing from the visible sky in an event known as an “unnova”. The US researchers’ work suggests that unnovae might also have their own characteristic flash, allowing astronomers to witness the birth of stellar- and intermediate-mass black holes.

“African people naturally have kinky or wiry hair. Non-African people have matted or animal-like hair. In other words, kinky or wire-like hair is an evolutionary advance since very few animals (sheep, buffalo, yak, etc.) have hair similar to African people. Kinky or wire-like hair is constructed like an antenna to absorb more readily those naturally occurring electromagnetic waves in nature. The “conscious waves” we mentioned earlier are also more attracted to kinky or wire-like hair. Matted or animal-like hair may generate electricity in the form of static; however, it is matted and limits the conversion of radiant energy into other forms of energy.”
