The AfroFuturist Affair: A Charity & Costume Ball came and went to a future near you on October 28, 2011, held in the space of The Windows Factory in Philadelphia, PA. The event, created/produced by R.P. and co-sponsored by Philadelphia Printworks and feyasterling inc., celebrated and focused the consciousness on Afrofuturistic culture by and through the works of feature artists, authors, musicians, and performers who presented creations that connect to Afrofuturism and Black Science and Speculative Fiction.

All proceeds of the first event were donated to Need In Deed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children apply academics (literacy, math, social studies, science) to addressing problems in their communities and schools. The AfroFuturist Affair tumblr remains to provide friends, supporters, historians, and aliens with archives on the first event, updates on Afro-future events, present goings-ons, and to exchange language, images, memories, notes, and energies with other Futurists across cyberspace/time.

Afro-Futurism is a literary, artistic and cultural aesthetic that considers Blackness as it looks and is defined in the future, examines science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and magic as it critiques the present-day situations of people of color, explores the implications of technology on Black art and literature, and interrogates historical events involving Blacks across the diaspora. Popular artists, musicians, theorists, and writers who can be linked with the Afro-Futurism include: Sun Ra, Saul Williams, Toni Morrison, Erykah Badu, Nalo Hopkinson, Outkast, Octavia Butler, Janelle Monae, Wu Tang Clan, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Amiri Baraka, George Clinton, Samuel Delaney, and many, many more.
